On February 12, 2025, His Excellency Tabaas, the Hungarian Ambassador to Ghana, met with Hon. Eric Opoku, the Minister for Food and Agriculture, to discuss ways to strengthen collaboration between Ghana and Hungary in the agricultural sector.

Both countries recognize agriculture as a crucial component of economic development and food security, highlighting the need for efficient practices and robust support systems for farmers. Ambassador Tabaas reaffirmed Hungary’s commitment to enhancing ties with Ghana, specifically in agriculture, and explored the potential establishment of a joint Agricultural Development Fund to support initiatives beneficial to both nations. He emphasized Hungary’s expertise in sustainable farming, agro-technology, and innovative agricultural practices, presenting opportunities for collaborative projects that could positively impact Ghana’s agricultural landscape.

The sector minister also highlighted the critical role of efficient irrigation in enhancing agricultural productivity, stressing the necessity for advanced systems to combat climate change, especially in drought-prone areas.

Hon. Opoku stressed the need to equip extension officers with modern agricultural techniques. They discussed the importance of training programs tailored for these officers to boost productivity and help farmers adopt innovative practices. The two discussed options for joint training initiatives, including potential exchanges of agricultural professionals and experts from Hungary, to foster structured knowledge transfer likely to benefit the Ghanaian agricultural system.

This meeting between H.E. Tabaas and Hon. Eric Opoku represents a significant step forward in strengthening Ghana-Hungary relations in agriculture, with both expressing keen interest in pursuing collaborative efforts focused on training extension officers and improving irrigation capabilities for Ghanaian farmers.
